Indian cavalrymen playing cards, France, during World War I . A group of soldiers from the Indian Army are standing watching four of their friends playing cards on a wooden crate. One of the card players is wearing spurs, indicating that these are cavalrymen. In the background other men are sitting in a makeshift shelter made of a tarpaulin over posts. In 1914 India was part of the British Empire and was a natural source of troops. Two infantry divisions and cavalry were taken to the Western Front in October 1914. They were involved in much of the worst fighting in 1914-1915. After 1915 the infantry were transferred to Mesopotamia but two cavalry divisions remained in France until 1918.
