About Edward Madigan

I am the Resident Historian at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) and a visiting fellow to the Changing Character of War Programme at the University of Oxford. My work combines cultural, military and religious history and my main research interests are British identity and culture in wartime, and the British and Irish experience and memory of the Great War. Since joining the CWGC I have begun to explore British attitudes to wartime death and the treatment of the war dead during and after the first and second world wars. As a historian of the Great War and the Irish Revolution I have appeared on British, Irish, U.S. and Australian television. I also sit on the UK Government's Centenary Events Planning Group, the Executive Committee of the International Society for First World War Studies, and the editorial board of the 1914-1918 Online Encyclopedia. My first book, Faith Under Fire: Anglican Army Chaplains and the Great War, was published in 2011, and I recently co-edited a volume of essays on the history, memory and commemoration of the decade of the First World War in Ireland.
