Dead German soldier, near Arras, France, during World War I. A dead German soldier lying outside the entrance to a dugout. Abandoned rifles and stick grenades lie in the trench beside him. This photograph was probably taken in the later part of the war, as in the earlier years the stick grenades had rounded ends to the handles. It may refer to the Arras campaign of April 1917. In April 1917, the Allies launched a vicious and initially very successful attack on the Germans in the area around Arras. Their gains against the enemy defences were, however, not consolidated and the Germans counter-attacked.
