Not only did the British recruit soldiers from various tribes of the Indian sub-continent but labourers as well to work behind the front lines. Evidently these men are from Manipur.

Original reads: ‘OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. INDIA, AS WELL AS FIGHTING MEN, HAS SENT TO FRANCE MANY FOR LABOUR. Natives of Manipur ready to do a war dance.’
