Wounded men of a third line Territorial Division being carefully moved to the rear on a light railway | Flickr

Access this resource

Wounded soldiers are lying on stretchers, positioned across open-topped railway carriages. All of the men are bundled up in blankets to keep them warm. The last man is being loaded on, near the top of the small train. A row of soldiers in uniform and wearing steel helmets stand to the side and watch. The ground looks extremely slippery and muddy; a piece of duckboard has been placed by the side of the track in an attempt to make things easier. On the left of the photograph, lengths of discarded railway track are visible.
